The inventor of the walkman

Andreas Pavel's histore proves that life is not easy for inventors. He waited for twenty-seven years to be recognized as the inventor of the walkman.
Pavel invented the walkman in São Paulo, in 1972. He transformed earphones and tape recorders into the “Stereobelt”, to be able to listen to his favorite singers, Janis Joplin and Orlando Silva.
Although Pavel patented his invention in Italy, in England and in the United States, Sony ignored the law and released the walkman as its own invention. It was a great sucess.
In 1999, a court finally acnowledged Pavel as the inventor of the walkman. He made a settlement with Sony for about ten milion dollars. In addition, he is going to receive royalties until 2021.

Texto 3 - Did Dracula really exist?

Did Dracula really exist?

Yes and no. Dracula is a books written by the Irish author, Bram (Abraham) Stoker (1847-1912) who told the story of an evil count from Transylvania (now part of Romania). The nobleman could turn into a vampire bat. He sucked people’s blood by biting them on their necks. His victims became his slaves.
Dracula was a figment of Stoker’s vivid imagination, but in the 1400s there was a cruel ruler os Transylvania know as Vlad the Impaler. He got this nickname because he had he had awful habits: he drove stakes through the bodies of his enemies and left them to die. No doubt Stoker had Vlad in mind when he wrote the book.

Texto 2 - A mother in doubt.

A mother in doubt

Dear Mr. Clover,
My daugther Laura tries to study English every day. But she never learns it well. Do you think that she has a bad memory for languages?
Aretha Thompson.

Dear Mrs. Thompson,
I don´t think Laura has a bad memory for languages. She is a bright student. Maybe your daughter lacks interest or she doesn´t like the subject for one reason or another. Perhaps she is studying at a wrong time of the day. You say that she “tries to study”. Why doesn´t she really study? I mean, study and not try to.
Sometimes people pretend to study, but unconsciously they don´t pay attention to what they are doing. Ask Laura to talk to her teacher before it is late.
Ken Clover (coordinator)

Texto 1 - Monarchies

Monarchies

There are still some monarchies all over the world.  However, not so many as there were in the distant past.
In a monarchy there is a sovereign such as a king, a queen, an emperor or an empress – in short – a monarch.
There was a time when monarchies were absolute. Nowadays, they are often limited by a constituiton, that is, the king or queen is the sovereign but the Parliament is responsible for the real government.
One of the most ancient and famous monarchies in the world is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The countries of the nited Kingdom are: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (or Ulster).
Among the British people there is some cristicism about the empire, but even this is part of a millenary tradition.
